(e) It is possible to produce a profile of the geoid with respect to the chosen reference
ellipsoid if a certain number of Laplace stations are given in a geodetic net. This profile can then answer
the question of whether the adopted reference ellipsoid properly represents the curvature of the earth
over the area being surveyed. The profile in Figure 1-18 indicates that between 50, north and 25, north,
along the 98th meridian, there is nothing more than random deviations from the referenced Clarke
ellipsoid. However, at 40, south the difference between the geoid and the ellipsoid approaches 200
meters.
