Impurities
Aggregates can contain such impure substances as organic matter, silt, clay, coal, lignite, and certain lightweight
and soft particles. Table 1-4 summarizes the effects of these substances on concrete.

Handling and Storing
Figure 1-6 on pages 1-14 and 1-15 shows both the correct and incorrect methods of
handling and storing aggregate.
You must handle and store aggregates to minimize segregation
and prevent contamination by impure substances.
