Another method of determining the absolute volume is to use the concept of specific weight, which is the weight
of a solid cubic foot of a material. The specific weight of a cubic foot of material is found by multiplying the
specific gravity of the material times the unit weight of water. Suppose your gravel has a specific gravity of 2.75.
The specific weight of the gravel would be 2.75 x 62.4 lb/ft3 = 171.5 lb/ft3. Thus the absolute volume of that 100
pounds of gravel is--
