Using table 5-3, be sure the outlet velocity is equal to or less than the maximum velocity of the channel
lining into which the culvert outlet will discharge. If outlet velocity exceeds the soils Vmax, the outlet
must be protected against erosion.
Use the least number of culvert pipes possible to carry the total flow and still be consistent with the above
criteria.

Determine the most economical pipe size and the quantity of pipe required for a culvert located under a runway,
with the general data cross section given below. The maximum using aircraft weight class for this example will
be an SR-71C.
