PART C - DITCHES AND FUNCTIONS
The following are the three basic ditches and the functions they perform on a construction project.
INTERCEPTOR DITCH
An interceptor ditch is located on the hillside above a structure. Its function is to intercept runoff before it
reaches the structure and direct its flow to a desired location. Generally it is used above the hill cuts to decrease
erosion on the cut slope.
DIVERSION DITCH
A diversion ditch carries water away from structures to low areas. It is often used in conjunction with interceptor
ditches.
SIDE DITCH
A side ditch is located along the side of a road. It collects water that runs off the road or surrounding ground and
transports it to a drainage structure or diversion ditch.
These ditches are illustrated in figure 4-1.
