Lesson 1/Learning Event 1
INTRODUCTION
Knowledge of the physical properties of soil is essential in solving many problems associated with the
design and construction of military roads, airfields, and foundations. Unfortunately, the usual urgency
of construction in the Theater of Operations frequently does not permit the development of complete
subsurface investigations. Therefore, the engineer locating complete soil information must rely upon his
own ability to identify soils and to judge their engineering characteristics. The engineer must make a
prompt decision as to the best possible location, the minimum amount of material needed to complete
the project on schedule, and the best means for controlling and improving the load bearing capabilities
of the soil.
