PART H - LINTELS
Lintels are placed above the windows and doors to carry the weight of the wall above them. Lintels can
be made of steel, precast reinforced concrete beams, or wood. Lintels rest on top of the last brick course
that is level or approximately level with the top of the window or door frame (Figure 3-31). The bricks
above the wall opening on which the lintels rest can be strengthened by the installation of steel
reinforcing bars. The placement of the reinforcing bars is determined by the wall thickness and the type
of window or door that is used (Figure 3-31).
